Paddles
(New)
There is a wide range of paddles to choose from. If you have a
folding kayak with a wooden frame, then the natural inclination
could be to have wooden split paddles in keeping with the character
of the kayak. Owners of alu framed folding kayaks will mostly likely
opt for composite type of paddles. The more you pay, the lighter
the paddle - EG Carbon fibre, Kevlar. Cheap paddles can be stowed
as spare emergency paddles.
Choosing the correct length / type of paddles.
Kayak
paddles (Euro style)
Generally speaking, for double (tandem) seater folding touring
kayaks (broad beam) with average height paddlers, we recommend
a 220cm paddle for the rear and a 240cm for the front paddler.
If the rear paddler is tallish, then 230-240cm. If you purchase
the same make pair of paddles of different lengths, you may be
able to mix them to produce 2 paddles of medium length. For a single
seater folding touring kayaks, opt for 230cm otherwise 240cm if
you are
above average height.
Wide paddle blades are more suitable for white water / surf, slimmer
blades are more suitable for long distance touring. If you have
shoulder / elbow problems, opt for narrower blades.
If you are planning to paddle in large open waters / off-shore,
then a spare emergency split paddle stowed on the kayak is highly
recommended. This spare paddle can be a cheaper paddle of average
length.
Kayak
paddles (Greenland sticks)
The traditional Greenland design is an increasingly popular choice
for sea-kayakers and is also excellent for long distance touring
in touring kayaks. The paddle is light, easy to control and can
reduce the risk of
shoulder injuries as well as being the least tiring design of paddle
to use due to the way the paddle is used. The selection
that we have is specially designed to be slightly longer than the
average Greenland paddles to cater
for the broader beam folding kayaks, otherwise we can still supply
shorter lengths for narrower boats. Generally speaking, the loom
should be as wide as your kayak. For
the total
length,
stand
flat-footed
on level ground and raise one arm overhead. Measure from the ground
to the tip of your fingers plus add about 10cm for kayak beams
greater than 75cm.
To some, the Greenland paddles look ineffective being so narrow
but they are not - actually the surface area of the Greenland blade
is the
same as the Euro blade whilst having longer leading edges. The Greenland
blades are not feathered so both wrists are kept at the natural
gripping angle - the oval shaped central loom is such that the
blade is held slightly canted for effective dynamic paddle strokes.
If you have wrist, elbow or shoulder problems, Greenland paddles
are the way to go.
Canoe
paddles (Single blade)
Length. Most canoeists require a paddle in the 52" - 60" (130cm
-150cm) range.
Rough guideline. Sit on a chair and measure the distance between
the chair to your eyebrows. This measurement should match the distance
from a paddle's grip to the throat, where the paddle shaft meets
the blade.
Fine tuning. For wider canoes or paddling from the stern (rear
seat), consider adding 2" (5cm) to the paddle length so you
can reach the water without excessive leaning.
Blade shape:-
Blade shape is complex, but it can simplified on where you paddle
the most. Long and skinny blades (traditional beavertail) are good
for cruising on lakes. Shorter and wider blades are best for rivers
and shallow water. Paddle blades measuring 8" x 20" (20cm
x 50cm) are most common and are a suitable choice for all round
use.
Grips:-
A palm grip offers flat water paddlers excellent comfort and control.
The shape fits naturally into the palm of your hand and is
comfortable for long trips. A T-grip lets you wrap your fingers
around the handle, so it offers precise control and a sure
grip - it is the preferred shape for whitewater paddlers and
children's paddles.

The Stork TM Fenris+ asymmetrical wooden split paddles - 225cm,
230cm & 240cm, clear varnished
A well crafted wooden paddle, which is great
for touring and recreational canoeing on calm or gently
moving waters. The paddle also features a resin coated
tip to help protect your paddle from abrasion and other
damage.
Left & right handed, with large push
button - easy on cold frozen hands! Longer length to handle
the broad beam of expedition touring folding kayaks. 30mm
dia.
The paddle is made mainly of pine wood, carefully
finished and and covered with clear lacquer providing resistance
to the water environment. Longitudinal bonding of different
strips provides extra strength to handle large stresses
that occurs during paddling.
Equipped with rubber O-rings.
At the bottom edge of the blades, there is
a strip of epoxy resin - to protect the wooden part of
a paddle when paddling in shallow water. On the side edges
of the blades, the pine wood is replaced by stronger ash
wood. The joint is tough plastic providing durability and
lower weight - compared to stainless steel joints which
is also prone to seizing.
Typically on a folding double seater touring
kayak, the recommendation is to go for one 225cm paddler
for the rear paddler and one 240cm for the front paddler.
You can mix to two sizes to make 2 x 232cm paddles.
