Not all inland water is open to canoeists, some are privately owned or is bounded by land which is private, so do check beforehand. See Useful Websites page.

English Canoe Classics: Volume 1 North
Twenty-five great canoe & kayak trips

English Canoe Classics is an illustrated guide to some of the finest tours of northern England's waterways, from the North Tyne in Northumbria to the Shropshire Union Canal in the West Midlands. Scenic lakes, placid canals and broad rivers, as they can only be seen from a canoe or kayak.

Eddie and 'Wilf' have chosen the best inland touring routes. They are described in great detail and illustrated with numerous colour photos and maps. The selected routes are suitable for open canoes, sit-on-tops and touring kayaks. Many of them can be tackled as a single voyage or a series of day trips, with campsites en route. The journeys are all accessible but highly varied, taking place on lakes, sheltered coastline, rivers and canals. A wonderful book for planning voyages and inspiring dreams, or sharing your experiences with others.

Eddie Palmer bought his first kayak over 50 years ago. It was a wood and canvas one in which he set out to paddle rivers in his part of middle England and Wales. Since then, he has kayaked and canoed extensively in the UK, Ireland, western and eastern Europe, the USA and Canada and southern Africa. His passion over the past few years has been for long-distance canoe-camping. After a competitive career in slalom and whitewater racing, he still paddles whitewater. Eddie is a Board Director of the SCA and is the co-author of Scottish Canoe Touring, author of Scottish Canoe Classics and co-author of Irish Canoe Classics (all published by Pesda Press).

Nigel Wilford has been involved with canoeing for most of his adult life, paddling throughout the UK, mainland Europe, Canada, USA and New Zealand. Born in northwest Leicestershire, his first canoe experience was on the gentle River Soar. Not long after, he moved to Yorkshire to attend university. The enjoyment he found while paddling the rivers of the northeast firmly established canoeing as his activity of choice. In 1991 he joined the British Canoe Union's coaching service, helping others to improve their canoeing or to become better coaches. Nigel has held various roles within the BCU including Local Coaching Organiser and English Whitewater Safety Coordinator. He is a BCU Level 5 Coach and member of Team Pyranha.

Great Glen Canoe Trail: Complete Guide To Scotland's First Formal Canoe Trail

This is a complete guide to Scotland's first formal canoe trail, the Great Glen Canoe Trail.

The guide is an essential resource to help you plan your paddling journey through the Great Glen across Scotland. As well as the calm waters of the Caledonian Canal there are the challenging open waters of Loch Lochy and Loch Ness. Here you will find advice on how to deal with the conditions as well as food, equipment, safety, communication and rescue.
The best craft for the adventure are open canoes, sea kayaks or touring kayaks. There is advice on choosing the right craft, loading it, and the best ways of carrying it over portages.
The coast to coast route can normally be completed in three to five days. We have split the route into a five day expedition and each day is described in detail, including camping and other forms of accommodation. There are also numerous single day options and, for the more advanced paddlers, suggested routes that link stretches of river with lochs and canal sections.

Scottish Sea Kayak Trail

Scotland’s west coast is an undisputed world-class sea kayaking destination. This book challenges the reader to kayak a 500km route, from the Isle of Gigha off the Kintyre peninsular, to the Summer Isles near Ullapool. It can be undertaken in four holiday-sized sections or as one long, glorious journey. The history of this country is inextricably linked to the west coast, from the Scoti to the Norsemen, the Lords of the Isles to the Clearances. An historical thread, woven through the text, tells ‘Scotland’s Story’. The emphasis is on practical advice; how to tackle tricky tidal passages; places to visit; where to source essential information; food re-supply; where to safely leave kayaks overnight; how and when to shuttle vehicles; and the accessibility of public transport. Although camping is an essential element of this journey the book does not identify wild camp sites or even picnic places. It gives sea kayakers enough information to seek out their own adventures and so spread the environmental impact. There are useful photographs and notes to help identify wildlife without disturbance, plus practical recommendations on wild camping, from minimum impact techniques to Scottish access law. For those who travel the trail in the comfort of their armchairs, there’s also the story of the author’s own journey. Together you will travel under big skies on imposing seas in the company of seals, dolphins, eagles and gulls. The Scottish Sea Kayak Trail is waiting for you.

Sea Kayak Navigation
Essential knowledge for finding your way at sea

Sea Kayak Navigation concentrates on those aspects of navigation that are relevant to kayakers. It is clear, concise and well illustrated throughout. The first edition (0953195619 which went out of print Spring 2007) rapidly became a standard text for sea kayakers. This new edition builds on that success. There are numerous improvements in the explanations and GPS is covered in more detail, reflecting the increased availability and usage of electronic navigational aids. Full use is made of colour photos, diagrams, maps and charts, further enhancing the reader’s experience. Canoe & Kayak Map of Britain
Double sided map featuring the waterways of England, Scotland and Wales.

This is what canoeists think ....
- 'This map deserves to become an essential part of a canoeists library'
- 'Pete Knowles has come up with another treasure'
- 'The inclusion of selected coastal trips was a welcome surprise'

- 'A perfect illustration of the paddling potential throughout the UK'

The Canoe and Kayak Map of Britain is a high quality map which shows the huge extent of canoeing possibilities on rivers, lakes, canals and coast. It is colour-coded to show clearly the nature of these waterways. Southern England and Wales appear on one side of the B1 sheet with Scotland and the North of England on the reverse.

The base map is very detailed and shows roads, towns, villages, rivers, streams, lakes and canals with this detail in pastel colours. Over this is superimposed the canoeing information in bright colours so that this stands out. Paddling information includes:-

-Tidal rivers and different Grades of river - Flat, classes: 1, 2, 3, 4.
- Navigations (e.g. canals) used by motorized craft.
- Especially popular canoeing trips are highlighted in yellow.
- Selected coastal paddles are marked, as are artificial white water courses.

This is a map for the 21st Century - created for the two million canoeists in Britain - to inspire, excite, dream and plan that next journey.

The author, Peter Knowles FRGS, is a world renowned expedition kayaker who has written and produced many popular and successful guide books.
